What is Direct Entry Route?


Direct Entry Route is an alternative option for the students who have completed their graduation and are looking forward to pursue ICAI CA Course. After selecting direct entry alternative, they can seek admission directly into the CA Intermediate (i.e. second level of CA), skipping the first level of CA Course i.e. CA Foundation.

It refers to direct entry in the ICAI Chartered Accountancy Course without appearing for entrance level exam that is CA Foundation.

Eligibility for Direct Entry Route

The following categories of students are eligible to register directly for ICAI CA Intermediate Course without passing the CA Foundation:
  1. Graduates or Post Graduates from Commerce stream having secured in aggregate a minimum of 55% of the total marks or its equivalent grade or other Graduates or Post Graduates having secured in aggregate a minimum of 60% of the total marks or its equivalent grade in the examination conducted by any recognized University (including Open University).
  2. Graduates or Post Graduates other than those falling under Commerce stream having secured in aggregate a minimum of 60% of the total marks or its equivalent grade in the examination conducted by any recognized University (including Open University).
  3. Candidates who have passed the Intermediate level examination or its equivalent examination conducted by The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (earlier called as ICWAI) or by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI).

Provisional Registration for Final Year Students

Students who are pursuing the Final Year of Graduation can register for the Intermediate course on the provisional basis before 6 months of completion of their graduation with the provisional proof that they will commence their article ship training after submitting their graduation mark sheet with the above-specified marks.

During the provisional registration period, a student can undergo and complete ICITSS (IT and OC). If such candidate fails to produce the proof within the aforesaid period, his provisional registration shall stand cancelled and the registration and other fees paid by him shall not be refunded/ adjusted and no credit shall be given for the theoretical education undergone.

Procedures under Direct Entry Route

For the Students who have cleared ICSI/ ICWA Intermediate level Exam-
  • Register with the Board of Studies for the ICAI CA Intermediate Course. 
  • Complete 8 months of the study period.
  • Appear and Pass in either or both Groups of CA Intermediate Course.
  • Successfully complete Four Weeks ICITSS any time after registering for CA Intermediate Course but before the commencement of the Practical Training.
  • Register for Three Years Practical Training on passing either or both the Groups of CA Intermediate Course. 
  • Register for the ICAI CA Final Course after qualifying both the Groups of CA Intermediate Course.
  • Successfully complete Four Weeks AICITSS during the last two years of Practical Training but before appearing for CA Final Examination.
  • Appear in CA Final Examination during the last six months of Practical Training.
  • Complete Practical Training, qualify both groups of Final Course.
  • Become Member of ICAI.
For the graduates and postgraduates-
  • Register with the Board of Studies for the ICAI CA Intermediate Course. 
  • Successfully complete Four Weeks ICITSS any time after registering for CA Intermediate Course but before the commencement of the Practical Training.
  • Join 3 Years Practical Training and appear in Intermediate Exams after 9 months of practical training.
  • Register for the ICAI CA Final Course after qualifying both the Groups of CA Intermediate Course.
  • Successfully complete Four Weeks AICITSS during the last two years of Practical Training but before appearing for CA Final Examination.
  • Appear in CA Final Examination during the last six months of Practical Training.
  • Complete Practical Training, qualify both groups of Final Course.
  • Become Member of ICAI.

What is CA Articleship? 

Articleship is an important part of the CA course and here's all you need to know about it. Basically, it is a practical experience of a CA work under a certified practicing CA / CA Firm. CA Articleship is a 3-year practical training phase that allows students to work on real assignments in real environment.  The basic aim of this articleship training is not to limit the CA Students with bookish knowledge but also introduce them to the real world challenges and mold them into true professionals.

Eligibility for CA Articleship:
  • For Foundation Students-
  1. Pass Group I of Intermediate or both groups of Intermediate.
  2. Complete 35 hours orientation programme and 100 hours of Information Technology Training (ITT) at any ICAI branch before commencement of articleship.
  • For direct entrants:
  1. Register for both groups of Intermediate at the ICAI
  2. Complete 35 hours orientation programme and 100 hours of Information Technology Training (ITT) at any ICAI branch before commencement of articleship.

What is ICITSS (ITT / OC)?

ICITSS stands for Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills. The course combines both information technology and soft skills. It is open to all the students who have passed CA Foundation or have taken a direct entry route. 
 
ITT (Information Technology Training) - 

The course develops an understanding for use of Information Technology in the field of accounting and auditing and uniform theoretical and practical knowledge to all the aspiring CA students. The training components of the course focus on use of Application Software relevant for Accounting, Auditing and allied areas related to the CA profession. The training would focus on knowledge of Electronic Spread Sheet, Data Base Management System, Computer Assisted Audit Technique (CAAT) and Accounting Package etc.
 
The highlights of the ICITSS - Course on Information Technology are as follows:
  • The classes are scheduled for minimum 6 hour per day in 15 working days.
  • A student is required to have minimum 90% attendance to successfully complete the Course on Information Technology (ICITSS).
  • The fee shall be Rs. 6500 (Six Thousand Five Hundred only) per student on nonresidential basis, inclusive of course material and tea/refreshment.
  • The accredited ITT center issues certificate to students who attended 90% classes and successfully completed the Course on Information Technology (ICITSS).

OC (Orientation Course)-
The Orientation Course aims to equip the entrants of the profession -
  • To familiarize with various dimensions of the Indian Accountancy Profession.
  • To develop effective communication and presentation skills.
  • To groom and motivate the entrants to be knowledgeable and skilled professionals.
  • To expand the significance of practical training in the life of a professional.
  • To foster values such as integrity, transparency and Independence in the budding professionals.

CA Inter Registration Process:

Candidates have to register for the Intermediate Course under both routes by filling Online Registration Form available on the ICAI website (www.icai.org) under 
E-services → Student’s Services → Entry Level Forms.
 
Candidates while filling the online form should take care of the following:
  • After filling the Online Form, pay the required fee online using the payment gateway.
  • On successful payment, the system will automatically generate the Form, which is to be printed.
 
The following documents are to be submitted to concerned Regional Office within 7 days of the date of online registration along with the print out of the online registration form, duly signed by the student.
  • Foundation Route students have to submit an attested copy of mark sheet of Class 12th or its equivalent Central Government recognized examination pass marks statement.
  • Direct Entry Route students have to submit an attested copy of the Graduation/ Post Graduation mark statement/mark sheet of Intermediate level examination of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India.
  • One recent color photograph (affixed on the printout of the online successful registration form)
  • Attested copy of proof of Nationality, if student is foreigner.
  • Attested copy of proof of special category certificate, i.e., SC/ST, OBC, Differently abled.
On completion of the registration process, the study material will be sent to the students through the Centralized Dispatch System (CDS).

Candidates through Foundation Route can opt for registration for Group I or Group II or Both Groups of Intermediate while Direct Entry Route candidates have to register for both the groups only. Payment of the fees is to be made as per the following table:

Conversion to Direct Entry Route:

Existing Students of ICAI CA Foundation Course on being eligible to join ICAI CA Intermediate Course through Direct Entry can any time register for CA Intermediate Course through Direct route by paying the Intermediate Registration fees only.

Students of CA Intermediate Course through ICAI CA Foundation Course on being eligible to join CA Intermediate Course through Direct Entry can convert to Intermediate through Direct Entry route by paying Rs. 500/- as conversion charges (study material will not be provided as has already been issued at the time of registration) and register for the balance group of Intermediate, if any.

Existing Students of ICAI CA Intermediate (IPC) Course, CA Foundation Course on being eligible to join CA Intermediate Course through Direct Entry can convert to CA Intermediate through Direct route by paying Rs 1000 as conversion charges and study material will be provided free of cost but have to register for the balance group of Intermediate, if any.

Introduction to CA Intermediate:

CA Intermediate is the second level of exam after clearing CA Foundation. Students after clearing CA Foundation Course become eligible to register for the CA Intermediate. Alternatively, graduates, postgraduates or students having equivalent degrees can directly register for the CA Intermediate exam without appearing for the entry level exams (i.e. CA Foundation), as explained above.

Exam for the CA Intermediate are held twice in a year, in the month of May and November.
