As such you can get yourself registered with the ICAI at any time after passing 10th examination but can appear for CPT Exam only on after appearing/ passing your 10+2 examination or equivalent examination.
Thus CPT is an entry level test for Chartered Accountancy Course.
CPT Exam is held twice a year in June and December for registered students of Common Proficiency Course (CPC). It is a test of four subjects –
Students who get registered for CPT 60 days before the exam i.e. on 1st April and 1st October will be eligible for the exam that will be held on June and December respectively. Students can register online through www.icai.org website or go to the ICAI office for submitting the application form.
Students needed class 10-mark sheet and a copy of Birth certificate. The registration fee is INR 6100 that needs to be paid by way of DD in favor of “The Secretary, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India”, payable at Mumbai / Chennai / Kolkata / Kanpur / New Delhi.
The CPT Exam will be held on 18th June 2017 for students registered for the CPC – Common Proficiency Course with ICAI up to 01st April 2017. Last CPT Exam was held on 18th December 2017 and results were declared on 17th January 2017.

CPT is an objective type test with negative marking.
CPT test is for 200 marks and is bifurcated into two sessions of two hours each with a break in between. Right answer gives you 1 mark and wrong answer deducts 0.25 marks.
An aspirant needs to get a minimum of 30% marks in each section and a minimum of 50 %marks in average, in all the four sections to pass the CPT. As such both the conditions should be satisfied for you to succeed the CPT Exam, 30% in every individual subject and 50% overall.

As mentioned above, to take up the CPT Exam you have to first get registered and then take up the CPT examination. As such there are 2 steps & separate fees for each step.
At the time of registration with the ICAI for CPC, you have to pay a Registration Fees. And for appearing in the Common Proficiency Test (CPT), you have to fill separate examination application form as per the Notification/Announcement issued by the Examination Division.

In Nutshell, Commerce graduates with minimum 55 percent marks and other graduates with minimum 60% marks can get a direct admission into IPCC which is the 2nd level of CA (Chartered Accountancy).
In Broad manner, students who satisfy the following conditions are not required to give the CPT Exam & can directly enter the 2nd level of CA Course which is IPCC – (This is referred as the Direct Entry Route to the Chartered Accountancy Course)
