General Information about CA Foundation (erstwhile CA CPT)


What is CA Foundation (erstwhile CA CPT)?

The CA Foundation Exam comes into picture with the Implementation of – Revised Scheme of Education & Training for CA Course.

The CA Foundaiton Exam is the 1st level of exam of students pursuing the Chartered Accountancy Course (CA).

The CA Foundation Exam replaces the erstwhile CA CPT Examination. The CA CPT Exam is a complete objective examination divided in 2 sessions having total 4 papers/ subjects. It is a 200 marks examination divided into 200 MCQs.

The CA CPT Exam takes places on a Single Day which is 3rd Sunday in the month of June and December every year. However, CA Foundation Exam is a mix of objective & subjective examination. The Foundation Exam is conducted on 4 separate days rather than on a single day.

The CA Foundation Exam is classified into 2 groups, having total 4 subjects (each of 100 marks) as follows -

Paper-1: Principles and Practice of Accounting (100 Marks)

Paper-2: Business Laws & Business Correspondence and Reporting (100 Marks)

  • Part I: Business Laws (60 Marks)
  • Part II: Business Correspondence And Reporting (40 Marks)

Paper-3: Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics (100 Marks)

  • Part I: Business Mathematics (40 Marks)
  • Part II: Logical Reasoning (20 Marks)
  • Part III: Statistics (40 Marks)

Paper-4: Business Economics & Business and Commercial Knowledge (100 Marks)

  • Part I: Business Economics (60 Marks)
  • Part II: Business and Commercial Knowledge (40 Marks)

Paper 1 and Paper 2 are subjective examination & Paper 3 and Paper 4 are objective examinations with Negative Marking.

When is the CA Foundation Exam conducted?

The CA Foundation Exam is conducted twice a year in the month of May and November which is exactly the same manner in which CA Foundation and CA Final Exam is conducted.

With CA Foundation Exam in place, all the 3 levels of Chartered Accountancy Course Examination will be conducted in the same months!

The 1st CA Foundation Exam was held in the month of May 2018.

A student can enroll for the CA Foundation Course after appearing in Class 12th Examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto.

However, a students can appear for the CA Foundation Exam only on satisfying the following conditions –

  1. Complete four months Study Period.
  2. Register till 30th June/ 31st December for being eligible to appear in November/May Foundation Course Examination.
  3. Pass the 12th examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognised by the Central Government as equivalent thereto and on complying with (ii) above.

For eg - a student appearing for his 12th Examination in the month of March-April, will be eligible to take the CA Foundation Exam in the month of Nov only as all the conditions get satisfied.

In the erstwhile CA CPT examination, a student could have enrolled in the examination at any time after giving his 10th examination. But, now he can enrol only after he has appeared in the 12th examination. (Condition for passing the 12th exam is not there for enrolment).

As such, a student earlier could have taken the May attempt of CA CPT after giving his 12th examination but the same is not possible now because of the conditions imposed. He will have to appear for the Nov attempt only.

CA Foundation Exam replaces the erstwhile CA CPT Exam. However, many students are already registered in the CA CPT Exam & have their exam dues in the forthcoming attempts. Considering this, the ICAI has notified that the existing CA CPT Exam will be conducted till June 2019 and as such there will 3 parallel attempts for CA Foundation and CPT in the month of May 2018 & June 2018, Nov 2018 & December 18 and May 2019 & June 2019.

CA Foundation Exam Pattern -

Changes in the CA CPT Syllabus from 2017 -

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) released a new notification about "CA New Syllabus 2017". This notification contains Implementation of Revised Scheme of Education and Training for CA Course w.e.f. 1st July 2017.

Please note that the Revised Scheme of Education and Training for CA course will come into effect from 1st July 2017. Students who are eligible to register in the CPT/ICPT/Final under the existing scheme may register on or before 30th June 2017. With effect from 1st July 2017, the registration in the CA CPT/ CA CPT/CA Final under the existing scheme will discontinue.

As such Existing CA CPT Course has now been changed to CA Foundation (CA Foundation) with certain changes in the CA Course & Syllabus. However, students who are already registered under the CA CPT and have their exams due, will continue under the same scheme. If they wish to convert into the new syllabus that is CA Foundation, they can contact the ICAI for the same.

The subjects of Foundation Course are classified into two groups which a student can study and appear in the examination group-wise or both the groups together. Students aiming for a Rank in CA Foundation Exam should give both the groups together. There are total 50 All India Ranks given by the ICAI on the CA Foundation Exam Level.

CA Foundation Course registration is valid for 4 years and can be revalidated any number of times for further 4 years period by paying revalidation fee of Rs.400/- or as decided by the Council from time to time.

For comparison purpose, following were the subjects in the CA CPT Exam –

Session 1

  • Paper-1: Fundamentals of Accounting (60 Marks)
  • Paper-2: Mercantile Law (40 Marks)

Session 2

  • Paper-1: General Economics (50 Marks)
  • Paper-2: Quantitative Aptitude (50 Marks)

No need for CA Foundation, Direct Entry to CA INTERMEDIATE

In Nutshell, Commerce graduates with minimum 55 percent marks and other graduates with minimum 60% marks can get a direct admission into CA INTERMEDIATE which is the 2nd level of CA (Chartered Accountancy).

In Broad manner, students who satisfy the following conditions are not required to give the CA Foundation Exam (or the CPT Exam) & can directly enter the 2nd level of CA Course which is CA Intermediate (erstwhile CA IPCC) – (This is referred as the Direct Entry Route to the Chartered Accountancy Course) –

  • Candidates who are Graduates/ Post Graduates in Commerce having secured in aggregate a minimum of 55% of the total marks or its equivalent grade in the examination conducted by any recognized University (including open University) by studying any three papers carrying a minimum of 50 marks in a semester/year and cumulatively 100 or more marks over the entire duration of the concerned course out of Accounting, Auditing, Mercantile Laws, Corporate Laws, Economics, Management (including Financial Management), Taxation (including Direct Tax Laws and Indirect Tax Laws), Costing, Business Administration or Management Accounting or similar to the title of these papers with different nomenclatures or other than those falling under Commerce stream having secured in aggregate a minimum of 60% of the total marks or its equivalent grade in the examination conducted by any recognized University (including Open University) are exempted from qualifying and are eligible for straight away registration to Foundation Course and undergo ICITSS. They can register for practical training after completing ICITSS and need not wait for clearing any group of Foundation Examination. They are eligible to appear in the Foundation Examination after completion of nine months of practical training.
  • Students who are pursuing the Final year Graduation Course can also register for the Foundation Course on provisional basis and such students’ registration would be regularised and they can commence practical training only on submission of satisfactory proof of having passed the Graduation examination with the specified percentage of marks within six months from the date of appearance in the final year Graduation examination. During the provisional registration period, a student can undergo and complete ICITSS. If such student fails to produce the proof within the aforesaid period, his provisional registration shall stand cancelled and the registration and other fees, as the case may be, paid by him shall not be refunded/ adjusted and no credit shall be given for the theoretical education undergone.
