What is Articleship in CS ?
- The term CS Articleship refers to the practical training programme required for students pursuing the Company Secretary (CS) course in India. A CS student is required to complete a period of practical training under the supervision of a practising Company Secretary or in a company for a specified period of time as part of the course curriculum. This hands-on training programme is known as CS Articleship.
- The length of the CS Articleship varies depending on the level of the CS course. A student must complete 3 years of practical training for the Executive programme, while the Professional programme requires only 2 years of training.
- During the CS Articleship, the student will gain practical experience in areas such as Company Law, Securities Law, and Corporate Governance, among others. The training assists students in developing practical skills that are necessary for a successful career in the corporate world. The practical experience gained during the CS Articleship also helps the student understand how to apply theoretical concepts learned in the classroom.
When CS Articleship Starts?
- Depending on the level of the course, the CS Articleship can begin at various times for students pursuing the Company Secretary (CS) course.
- After passing the first module of the Executive programme, a student can register for CS Articleship. The student must complete the remaining modules of the Executive programme before the Articleship period ends.
- After passing both modules of the Executive programme and the first module of the Professional programme, a student can register for CS Articleship in the Professional programme. The student must complete the remaining modules of the Professional programme before the Articleship period ends.
- The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), which is the regulatory body for CS courses in India, accepts applications for CS Articleship. The application, along with the required documents and fees, should be submitted in accordance with the ICSI guidelines.
- To be eligible for the CS certification, a student must complete the CS Articleship period within the maximum period allowed by ICSI.
How Long Is CS Articleship?
- The length of the CS Articleship depends on the level of the Company Secretary (CS) course.
- For the Executive programme, a student must complete a three-year practical training programme known as CS Executive Articleship.
- The Professional programme requires two years of training, known as CS Professional Articleship.
- It is important to note that the CS Articleship period can be reduced by up to six months for Executive students and up to three months for Professional students, subject to certain conditions outlined by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), India's CS regulatory body.
- Students gain practical training and experience in areas such as Company Law, Securities Laws, and Corporate Governance during their CS Articleship. Details of New Training Structure
- 15 days Online Mode
- 15 days Classroom Mode
- After completion of this training, a student has to undergo 21 months practical training.
- Once the 21 months practical training gets completed, a student has to undergo Corporate Development Programme commonly called as CLDP.
- The duration of this programme is decided by ICSI which is usually ranging between 30-60 days.
- The occurrence of this training happens after Professional Programme
Executive Development Programme
This exercise is done in 2 different types of modes as mentioned above also, 15 in the classroom and 15 through the ICSI E learning portal. That means this Executive Development Programme is done for total 30 days.
The students can do both the classroom mode EDP as well as e-EDP simultaneously

There is a prescribed fees for this programme which is Rs. 2000/-
Exemptions from EDP- there are certain modes of exemption also available and applicable, for example if you have completed 15 days Academic Programme under the old structure, one is eligible to get exemption from 15 days classroom EDP requirements

CS Practical Training
- The practical training can be started only after completing one month of EDP. A student has to go 21 months practical training which has been brought into applicability from 03rd Feb 2021.
- If one is undergoing training in accordance with the provisions of old training structure, then the student may continue and complete the training in accordance with the said structure.
- The student may, at his own discretion. switch over to the new training structure under the CS (Amendment) Regulations, 2020.
- As per the new Guidelines, a total number of 52 leaves are allowed in 21 months training under New Training structure
- This practical training is nothing but infact an internship programme wherein the student will get training under specified entities only.
- The duration of the programme is 21 months
Corporate Leadership Development Programme(CLDP)
Last but not the least, is the Corporate Leadership Development Programme. This programme is done after passing Professional Program and completing the practical training and one month EDP.
The duration of the training is between 30-60 days.
The duration may be altered by the Institute before one applies for ACS membership.
